Locum Tenens Companies

Locum Tenens Companies

As with any other job, one of the first questions physicians ask locum tenens companies is, "How much does it pay?" It is helpful to understand the details of how doctor staffing and recruiting agencies pay the doctors working locum tenens jobs.

How Locum Tenens Companies Pay or Compensate Physicians

Almost all locum tenens companies pay physicians on a per-day basis based on specialization. For example, a family practice doctor may earn $600 per day and a neurosurgeon may earn $4000 per day. A day is seen as eight hours of work, not counting lunch. If the hospital or clinic needs the doctor to work longer hours, the pay increases. For example, the family doctor working 50 hours in a week might earn $3000 per week plus an additional compensation for the overtime. All compensation amounts are for example only, actual compensation will very. Onyx M.D. are contractors and as such receive a 1099 tax statement at the end of the year from Onyx M.D. for services rendered. An independent contractor provides services to a company, but is not an employee of that company. All Onyx M.D. locum tenens providers are considered independent contractors.

Locum tenens companies have different policies in place covering when payments are made to physicians. Some physician staffing companies prepare payments for the 15th day of the month and the last day of each month. Other companies pay on the 1st and 15th of each month. A few companies pay once a month, on the first or last day. The locum tenens contract will state when payments are made to doctors.

All locum tenens companies, such as Onyx M.D., pay physicians as contract labor as opposed to paying as an employee. The physician recruiting company does not withhold any taxes on behalf of the doctor. A 1099 is sent to the doctor in January to show the previous year's earnings.
