What is locum tenens?

In other words, a locum tenens physician is a physician who provides temporary services within a healthcare facility. Locum tenens physicians contract with Onyx M.D. to provide temporary physician services for a specified amount of time. Physicians are paid directly by Onyx M.D. and, while on assignment, receive paid medical malpractice liability insurance, travel to the assignment, lodging and a car for your exclusive use.

What if I want to work in Colorado but I have a Pennsylvania medical license?

With the exception of Federal facilities such as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Department of Defense (DOD), an active medical license in the state in which you intend to practice is required. At Onyx M.D., our goal is to help you achieve your goals. Our credentialing department will work closely with you to assist with the license application process and is very effective at reducing the paperwork. What questions should I ask myself when considering a locum tenens staffing company?

It is vitally important to both Providers and Clients that they work with a reputable firm. Onyx M.D. has a reputation for providing reliable facilities with reliable practitioners. When considering a locum tenens agency, you should ask:

  1. Is the agency a member of the National Association of Locum Tenens Organization (NALTO) and the National Association of Physician Recruiters (NAPR)?

    NALTO is the industry association that determines ethical business practices within the locum tenens industry. As a member, Onyx M.D. strictly adheres to their standards and regularly attends their meetings to stay informed on new issues and policies. Similarly, the NAPR maintains ethical guidelines for agencies involved in the permanent recruitment of physicians.
  2. Does the agency provide malpractice insurance for the physicians they place?
    All locums physicians that contract with Onyx M.D. receive coverage appropriate to the state in which they practice. For more details, please contact an Onyx M.D. consultant. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
  3. What is the agency's payroll history?
    All Onyx M.D. physicians are paid on the 15th of the month and the last day of the month for the period ending two weeks prior and then every two weeks thereafter. Period.
  4. Does the agency handle the details? The Onyx M.D. travel department handles all of your travel needs while on the road. Our consultants will work closely with you to make sure that your air travel, accommodations, car rental and any other necessary arrangements meet your standards.

What if I require coverage for long periods of time? What about short assignments?

Onyx M.D. has filled coverage needs that range from evening call to twelve months. While the typical assignment lasts around three weeks, we encourage you to speak with an Onyx M.D. consultant about any coverage gaps you may have. Our roster of Providers grows every day and each Provider has different availability. We look forward to working closely with you to satisfy all of your coverage needs.
