What is locum tenens?

What are locum tenens physicians?

A locum tenens physician is a physician who provides temporary services within a healthcare facility. Locum tenens physicians contract with Onyx M.D. to provide temporary physician services for a specified amount of time. Physicians are compensated directly by Onyx M.D.  Additionally, while on assignment, locum tenens physicians and CRNAs receive paid medical malpractice liability insurance, as well as pre-paid travel, lodging, and transportation.  Onyx M.D. locum tenens providers are independent (1099) contractors, not employees of Onyx M.D.

Why do physicians choose to do locum tenens?

The freedom and flexibility of a locum tenens assignment makes it an attractive option to many physicians. Whether you are just completing your training or have been in practice for many years, contracting as a locums provides the opportunity to experience a variety of different practice settings. For the new physician, we recommend locums as a way to learn more about your career options before settling into a permanent opportunity. For the seasoned physician, the change of pace and lifestyle will help strengthen your skills and expose you to new challenges and opportunities that may differ from those to which you are accustomed. For all practitioners, the excitement of travel and the opportunity to visit different parts of the country makes locums assignments seem more like a working holiday than another day of traditional practice.
