Hospitalist Recruiting

Many hospitals look at the cost of hiring a hospitalist through physician employment agencies and balk at the numbers they see. The hospital believes it can find a qualified candidate on its own to save the money for use in other areas. Unfortunately, many hospitals end up paying more money during the hiring process than if they had used the physician placement service.

The hospital should consider the cost of paying employees to perform their normal job duties plus the time spent covering the duties vacated by the hospitalist. Add in the time and cost of employees preparing and placing advertisements in medical journals, periodicals, websites and bulletin boards. A cost should be assigned to the time used by members of a committee sorting through curriculum vitae, preparing interview questions and conducting phone interviews. Then there is the cost of bringing in prospective employees for interviews. The entire process can cost six months to a year's worth or more of the salary of the hospitalist being replaced.

Use a Temp-to-Perm Strategy for Hospitalist Employment and Physician Hires

To avoid going through the work and expense of hiring another hospitalist in the near future, many hospitals hire physicians on a temporary basis with the possibilities of making the positions permanent. The hospital and the doctor benefit by learning how well the doctor functions on a day-to-day basis.
