Medical Staffing Agencies
|
The first formal medical staffing agency was established by the University of Utah in the early 1970s. After recognizing a need to find doctors to work in remote areas in the western states, the University of Utah applied for and received a federal grant to create locum tenens jobs for doctors. The physician staffing services of the university were successful in linking doctors with communities in need in western states. Within a couple of decades, a large number of medical staffing agencies were created and today, thousands of doctors participate in locum tenens jobs. Choosing Medical Staffing AgenciesWhen looking for a medical staffing agency to work with, it is important to make sure the firm has set standards for operations and follows a specific code of conduct. The National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations started in 2001 when medical staffing agencies recognized a need to establish standards for their industry. Today, well over 80 percent of locum tenens work comes through agencies that are a part of NALTO. NALTO oversees ethics, qualifies agencies, provides settlements for disputes and looks out for the well-being of physicians, medical facilities and physician staffing firms.NALTO provides a list of approved medical staffing agencies for medical facilities to find reputable agencies quickly to work with, such as Onyx M.D. Firms registered with NALTO cover almost every specialization in medicine. Some firms focus on one area of medicine, while others find locum tenens positions for a wide array of doctors. |
